Description:

In 1998 I used a telephoto lens of 200mm/f5 with a 2x teleconverter to zero into reflection surfaces. Because of the converter, the aperture was smaller in most cases, thus a longer exposure resulted. I got a time-average effect of reflections in moving water. In "Out of Darkness," the image has a quality of motion against a dark background, a series of leaf-like oranges formed a jaw-like structure. In "Soft Golden Reflections," a continuous series of yellow leaf-shaped reflections look more like blots from a paintbrush with only a few patches of a blue sky showing, making the photo very impressionistic. On the other hand, "Leaf in Dance" shows an oak leaf floating on the surface of the water, topped by a moving reflection of a light-colored trunk. The floating oak leaf looks like a dancing figure to me, so does the zig-zag of the trunk reflection above. Because I focused on the leaf and opened up the aperture, the rest of the reflections was time-averaged out as well as defocused and the result was as though the background were painted in broad black, maroon, and gray wavy lines.
