Franz Schubert never visited Venice. In spirit, he must have as he composed at least one song, called, "Der Gondelfahrer" (D808 -solo and 809 - Male Quartet Version). The text was written by Johann Mayrhofer and the scene looks like: On a moonlit night, a gondolier is still rowing his boat as the bell in St. Mark's Tower (Markusturm, Campanile) rings twelve times for the midnight hour and everyone sleeps peacefully. This shot, made during my 2002 stay in Venice in early March, highlights the Campanile of San Marco (Markusturme, St. Mark's Tower)in the evening light at the waterfront of Venice, Italy (Venedig, Italien, Venezia, Italia). Close to the center, the tower of St. Mark's dominates even though the tower is behind the Giardinetti Reali (royal gardens) and the Procuratie Nuove. The Dogana di Mare with a weathervane figure of Fortuna on top is on the left and the Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace) is on the right. |
