| Description: Views of San Giorgio Maggiore (the church and the tower, or the Campanile) are memorable perhaps because of the beautiful church architecture designed by Andrea Palladio and the famous painting of the view of the church by Monet. The church and the cloisters were built between 1559-80. The white façade sandwiched by a blue sky above and a blue water in the foreground makes a memorable picture. The white façade used by Palladio was modelled after a temple structure in Roman architecture and adapted for a Christian church.
Andrea Palladio, who was one of great Renaissance architects, was born into a poor family, in Padua, Italy in 1508. He was apprenticed to a stonecutter at age 13. He ran away, taking refuge in Vicenza where he found a job as an assistant stonecutter. His break came in 1537 when he was sent to work for the humanist scolar Giangiorgio Trissino. Trissino taught Palladio the essence of a Renaissance education and the principles of classical architecture. Beside the education he obtained, Palladio benefited from his particular time in which he was to work. | |
